Is it true that there are real, live volcanoes within the city limits of Portland?

Mount Tabor Park in East Portland is a dormant volcano
which might, though not very likely, awake someday.  The snow
capped peak in the distance is Mount Hood.

Why do you think we're all so testy and weird?  There are volcanoes all over the place in the Pacific Northwest.

There are three located within the city limits
  1. Mount Sylvania out near Tigard.  If it wiped out Tigard no one would notice.
  2. Mount Scott.  There's a Boy Scout camp on top of Mount Scott.  If it erupted and wiped out a bunch of Boy Scouts, a few people would notice.  But not many.
  3. And then there's Mount Tabor, smack in the middle of the east side of the city.  Plenty of people would notice if East Portland disappeared, but it's questionable if anyone would really care.
All three are dormant.  Not extinct.  Dormant.  Meaning not doing much right now but that could change tomorrow.  Or later today.

But wait, there's more.

There's a major earthquake fault running south to north right through downtown Portland.

See them thar hills, the so-called West Hills?  (The actual name of this ridge of hills is the Tualatin Mountains like anyone cares.)

That's the edge of Portland earth quake fault.   Come the big one, the Mac Club will have unlimited underground parking.  Way underground.
